Real Baby Essentials

The Short List
If you're looking for a specific list of items, here you go. This list will get your through the first month or two and after that you're dying to get out of the house and buy things anyway.

A Pack-N-Play or bassinet. The Pack-N-Play is most practical as it has more uses down the road and most come with a bassinet and changing table.

A regular sized pack of newborn diapers. Most babies are out of newborn diapers within weeks, if not before. Little boys are notorious for leaking out of certain brands, so you might want to try different brands as you go to get the best fit for your little one. Wipes and ointment are also needed.

A package of about three bottles. Leave these in the package until you're sure you need them so that you are able to return or exchange them if necessary. Remember to sterilize them before use, though. Bottle brushes are great, but not really necessary.

Wait to see what sort of formula the hospital sends home before trying to stock up on some. Grocery stores and even little convenience stores carry almost all brands of formula, so there is no sense of emergency if you need to grab a can on the way home from the hospital.

Basic clothing in 0-3 Month Sizes. If you are expecting an average sized baby, it is better to buy small clothing with the expectation that baby will grow into them within a week or two than to outgrown newborn clothing within days. You also only need a few packs of onesies, socks, and pajamas to get through the first month.

Adorable outfits are often more trouble than they are worth and rather expensive for the amount of time your little one will fit into them. Six to nine onesies, and three to six pairs of pajamas will do nicely. Find socks without thick elastic around the ankle to protect any adorable chubbiness baby might have there.

A carseat
. Baby must travel safely, and a car seat is required by law. Read reviews to find the best one for your needs and be sure it is installed correctly.

Baby shampoo and soap. Your little one isn't supposed to take a full bath until the umbilical cord has fallen completely off. This can take up to, or even over a week. After that time, a tub is useful, but a sink might do just as well and be easier to clean and drain. You will need a bit of soap and washcloth to keep your little one clean, however.

A Few More Semi-Necessities
There are a few other items that are worth their weight in gold, but not really necessary. If you have the budget and space, terrific. If not, take a pass on these.

A swing. Most babies love the swing and it can help them relax and fall asleep while parents are trying to do other things.

A bouncer or papasan. Babies have been known to fall asleep in their little seats as well. They are also good for letting baby check out the world around her.

A front carrier. There are many brands available that allow you to wear your baby. These packs help keep baby safe and comfortable while leaving your hands free to do other things.

A stroller. As nice as they appear, some of the giant strollers that come with car seats often don't get as much use as you may think. A smaller, more basic stroller is easier to take along and does the job just fine.
