Introducing Ava Rose Struz
posted on 05/07/2008

Our little girl entered the world at 10:36am on April 28th via emergency c-section!  She weighed in at 6lbs 10oz and was 20.5 inches long.  She has a FULL head of hair and looks just like her big sister did.  She had a 4 day NICU stay, which was pretty scary, but she is doing MUCH better now.

Here is my birth story!

I woke up about 5:30 Monday morning and called L&D at 6am prompt.  I was told to be there by 7:30 to start the induction.  Pete's mom came over to watch Hailey and we headed off to the hospital thinking we would have an easy induction like last time.
We were at the hospital by 7:45, registered and IV's in by 8:45 and doctor Weidman came in and checked me at 9am.  I was dialated to 3 and he tried to break my water but was unsuccessful so he said he just scratched it.  At 9:10 I was sitting in the rocking chair and I felt this HUGE gush...GROSS..it was the weirdest feeling ever.  My water had broken.  Clear fluid which was good.  I was hooked up to pitocin which started out really slow. I sent Pete to get some breakfast. By 9:45 however my contractions were beginning to pick up a good bit and with each contraction I was noticing that Ava was NOT tolerating them well at all.  With each contraction, she would kick super funny and her heartrate would go way down, then when the contraction was over, she would be fine, heartrate back up.  Pete came back just as this was all starting.
The nurse came in and I asked to change positions and use the bathroom.  I went to use the bathroom and when I came back I got into bed and they could NOT find a heartbeat on her!  I was terrified at this point.  I think I had about every nurse and doctor in my room in a matter of 5 minutes.  I had one putting a fetal monitor on Ava's head, another rolling me onto my side shaking my belly and rolling it, trying to stimulate my sweet girl.  I was in complete tears at this point and Pete was just as worried as I was as I could see the look on his face.
They finally got the fetal monitor on and oxygen on me and they got her heartbeat.  It was still very low but it started to come up.  The doctor talked to me about a c-section and I just told him to do whatever he needed to do.  At this point her heartbeat started coming down again.  Pete was told to drink 2 things of OJ and to put his scrubs on.  He went to the bathroom and by the time he got back we were all gone.  He ran into the hall, which was like ghost-town he said and asked where I was.  Someone said the emergency c-section....oh, straight down the hall..so he ran down the hall.  I was in the OR by 10:30, at which point the Anestisiologist and my doctor were deciding what to do when my doctor said to him, I don't have time for the spinal, put her out.  So I was put under general anestisia and knocked out.  My little girl entered the world 6 minutes later at 10:36am!
Pete was NOT able to be in the room with her delivery because it was such a scary time, but after she was born and doing well he was allowed in to see her and take some video.
We were told that after Ava was born she took about 2-3 breaths on her own and then stopped breathing...she still maintained a heartbeat but was no longer breathing.  So they were breathing for her for about 4 minutes when she finally just started on her own! Praise God!  She had horrible apgars of 3/5!  My heart just sank when I heard this.

She was taken right down to the NICU for some observation and I was wheeled to recovery!  Pete said I woke up in a world of pain and was VERY uncomfortable.  I just remember shaking so badly when I woke up and the pain was horrible...almost unbearable!  They gave me warm water bottles to hold and warm blankets to try to calm my body down.  It had just gone through some major stress!

Ava was now in the NICU and she was doing pretty good.  They put an IV in her to keep her fluids up and incase they needed to give her any medications.  As I was wheeled to my recovery room, I was able to stop by the NICU to see her for the first time.  It was priceless. My little angel just lay there so content and happy despite everything she had just been through!
I was FINALLY able to hold her that night and that was a memory I will NEVER forget.  This little body just looking up at me and I could totally tell she knew I was her mommy! As she settled right in.  Tears of pure joy ran down my face!
While in the NICU Ava wasn't able to eat for 2 days and she was being treated for a possible infection.  On Tuesday night I was able to Kangaroo her (skin on skin) and It was incredibly healing for the both of us..as she and I both took HUGE strides the next day!  Ava started eating that next morning and sucked down her bottle.  I was able to walk better and further as I had motivation to get down to the NICU to see my girl.  They also did a cranial u/s on her, something they do on every NICU baby and found a calcium deposit on her back of her skull/brain, but her catscan came back clear.

Wednesday night Pete got to hold her for the very first time and he had such joy all over his face!  And they also moved her out of the main NICU as she was making huge strides!
Thursday morning I went to feed her with Hailey and Pete in tow, as Hailey really wanted to see her baby sister!  Pete went in and came out and said they had already fed her as she was very hungry and that she was coming to our room in a 1/2 hour.  I lost it as there were tears of joy streaming down my face.  This was something I completely didn't see coming.  She joined us in our room only 20 minutes later and was able to meet her BIG sister.  It was an AMAZING expereince as we were told she may not be able to come home with us the following day, so this was a true answer to prayers!  Our little family of 4 was complete!  It was a special time to be together just the 4 of us!

Ava and I were able to come home Friday afternoon together.  Pete and Hailey picked us up!  We drove home together, complete as a family of 4!!!!!!

Had my appointment today!  Baby girl is doing good.  Doc. checked me and said I was still about 2, maybe a little more, but I had started to thin out a little bit more! YAY!

Not to much of an exciting appointment.  Although, Hailey did ask the doctor, and I quote, " why does mommy have to take her pants off" LOL Both Weidman and I just started laughing.. it was pretty funny!

We talked about induction and we are set for Monday the 28th!  I have to call in the morning at 6am to make sure they have a bed open and we will go from there!

So Its Baby Day in less then 1 week! AHHHHH Laughing

37/38 wk appt and u/s
posted on 04/16/2008

So I had my appt. wed. afternoon for an u/s and reg. visit.  Little miss is weighing in at 6lbs 8oz (so almost as big as Hailey was at 41 weeks) and she is doing great!

I am still having a bunch of contractions, but good news is they are doing my cervix some good. On Monday I was just over 1cm dialted (he said 1-2 but closer to 1) and at my appt wed. afternoon I was a full 2 if not a little more. YAY. But let me tell you though these contractions are NO FUN.

Other news...He said he will NOT let me go 41 weeks again (Bless his soul!) and that if I am still uncomfortable on Tuesday at my 38/39 wk. appointment we will talk about an induction at 39 weeks, so that is only next friday!!!!! Although if I don't go on my own, I am hoping we can push it to that following Monday as I have SO MUCH going on that weekend.

OH and I didn't have a bladder infection afterall, so I stopped the meds. But doc thinks that I was on the verge of starting one and the meds just kicked it out right away. SO YAY for not having to take some stinkin medication!

So Hailey and I are going to walk and walk and walk tomorrow..and the day after and so on... I would really like to go into labor on my own, but will take what I can get. I had a GREAT induction with Hailey, so I am not so worried about that, I guess I just want to experience going into labor on my own.

Next appointment is Tuesday!!! :) If I make it that far ;)

Trip to L&D
posted on 04/13/2008

So Sunday I woke up not feeling well at all!  I felt very flu like and just kind of laid around all day.  I wasnt' hungry, very tired...so on...

I hadn't slept well the night b4, so I thought it was from this, but after I napped with Hailey, I noticed I was having some really good contractions and I was also feeling a TON of pressure.  So I called my neighbor Terri and asked her opinion as she use to be a L&D nurse.  She said I should probably give a call to the doc and that I was having some good contractions.

So I called and of course they said to go to L&D!  So off we went with Hailey in tow.  I got there about 6:30, had 1 really good contraction then they kinda stopped.  I was VERY dehydrated and they noticed a little blood in my urine, which possibly meant an infection.  So came back that I had a slight bladder infection and to drink drink drink.  They were going to release me about 8:30 when I got up to go to the bathroom, I came back, they hooked me up to the monitors and I started contracting every 3-4 minutes and they HURT!  So Pete took Hailey home to get her in bed and I stayed in the hospital...well a few minutes after he left I was informed that I was going to stay the night...GREAT!  My mom and dad came to stay for a little bit and I was still having some good contractions.

I was moved to a private room and had my blood drawn as well as started an IV.  Let me tell you, they couldn't find any good veins for the IV and had to call the anestisiologist in to get the IV in me.  She finally did it and she put it in my hand..OUCH the tip was right at my wrist and it hurt SO MUCH!  But it was in.  They also gave me some Ambien to help me sleep.  By 11:15 I was seeing triple of the nurse and I crashed.  I crashed for a good 3 hours when I woke up with some more contractions and the need to use the bathroom.  So I called the nurse, who kindly helped me and then dozed in and out until about 7.  I got up having less and less contractions.

Doctor Weidman finally came in about 8am and checked me, said I was 1-2 cm dialated but that he was going to release me and to make a follow-up appt for wednesday to have and u/s to check the baby's weight as well as an appt. with him.

So Pete and Hailey came to pick me up (Hailey dressed in her PJ's and slippers..lol) and we went to pick up my script for my bladder infection.

I was VERY glad to be home.

Monday night we went and picked up the crib! Put it together and got some more baseboard run, as we are def. feeling the need to get things as prepared as possible for this little sweet bundles arrival!

34/35 wk. U/S!
posted on 03/27/2008

We had our 35 week u/s today (a day short of 35 weeks!)  Baby girl is looking beautifully!! She was all clear of the bowel issues as we figured she would be based on the 30 wk. u/s.  She measured right on and was weighing in at 5lbs 1oz.  She looked SO much bigger even on the u/s it was wild.  She gave the U/S tech a few good kicks..hehe and at the very end, the u/s tech showed us HAIR!  It was so cool  it was a shot of the top of her head and you could see her hair waving in the fluid!  What an amazing thing to be able to see!

So we are all clear for NO MORE U/S's! YAY!!!!  Only 5 more weeks until we get to meet this little princess! I can't wait!

32 week appointment.
posted on 03/10/2008

All went well at the appointment today.  Baby girl measured about 33 weeks via belly measurement. Heartrate was in the 140's.

I talked to the doc. about my dizzyness, and said it was probably from something that I had going on with my colds....so we kinda wrote it off hoping it doesn't happen again.  BP was normal, so it wasn't much of a concern.

I go back in 2 weeks!
