Bennett Mitchell Speck

JOURNAL

September 12th - Day Twenty-Four, 9:00am
posted on 09/12/2007

Good morning, all.  I just spoke with Bennett's nurse, and he had another good night last night!  Evidently he is very sensitive to sound (and it can be very loud in his corner sometimes), so sometimes this causes him to be pretty irritated and his blood gases will be off, but overall the gases have been good.

We're still on cloud 9 after last night, so please see that post for the latest because it hasn't really changed much since then.  Even though he has taken huge strides in the last few days, he still has a long road ahead of him and always carries the risk of taking a few steps back.  So please continue in prayer with us for our son's complete healing, for the steady improvement of his lungs, for the continued decrease (and no return) of infection, for protection from seizures, and for wisdom and guidance for the wonderful medical staff at Georgetown as they continue to provide him amazing care.

As we were holding him last night, I told him that "you will never believe what you've been through when we tell you about it someday."  But I can assure you that we will read him every comment, email, card, and show him every picture so that he WILL remember his experience.

Thank you all for your love, your prayers, and your faith.  We'll post another update as soon as we know more.

Love,

Travis, Kelly, and Bennett

Super pictures, who's the older lady in the picture, must be an elderly nurse or someone who just happened by. Love you all, still praying.

One day at a time, sweet Jesus! Each day that passes and Bennett is still here - Praise the Lord! Each day that passes and the two of you plus many family are still there at the hospital by his side - Praise the Lord! Each day hundreds of prayers go up for the Lord's will in the life of this little soul - Praise the Lord! Each day you struggle with these feelings, the ups and the downs, God is creating in you a greater faith which he can use to honor him in the years to come. Take care of yourselves, too. Rest and eat well and spend time together alone. Pray and read the Bible - talk to God and let him talk to you. Keep the faith and don't be afraid, especially at night when you go to sleep. God never sleeps - he is watching!

LORD, how can we thankyou enough for this awesome gift! Somehow all of us watching and praying for Bennett feel as if it's been a personal gift from your hand to each of us but we know that the gift is most precious to your servants Kelly and Travis and their families. We praise you for your providence, your wisdom, your graciousness, your salvation, your comforting presence, your healing power, your unending love, and for the salvation we have through YOUR son Jesus Christ. We know that our knowledge is so limited, we know that our prayers can only be answered correctly as you see fit. Thankyou for seeing fit to heal Baby Bennett this much. PLEASE PLEASE HEAL HIM FULLY SOON!THANKYOU LORD.
And thankyou Travis and Kelly for sharing your experience with us. You guys are great!

For Bennett, sometime in 2012 or so...when you can read :),
Just wanted you to know that in your first few weeks of life, you had a whole congregation praying for you in Indianapolis, Indiana...the North Central Church of Christ. They've looked at your pics, and they've marveled at how precious you are. They too rejoice with you and your parents in your healing.

I love that you finally got to hold that sweet little boy! The pictures are wonderful! Joy fills my heart knowing that you were able to hold him but it also thrills me for Bennett. I think he needed to be in your arms as much as you needed to hold him. You all look great together with such sweet first moments. Thank you for sharing them.

I love that they have moved him to a new bed! This is a big deal too. Bennett's progress is awesome. Now, I am praying him home to his beautiful bed with the two of you. I know there are several steps that still have to happen but you are so close! Much love and continued prayers. M

I have sweet tears as I see you both holding Bennett. God is good and makes even the smallest of things precious beyond words. This has been quite the journey and I will keep praying as it continues, but I'm so thankful for these oasis moments of pure joy for y'all.
comment by Grana on 09/12/2007
Dearest Bennett,
One of the most precious memories that I will always hold so very dear to my heart was when nurse Ashley from the NICU put you in your mommy's arms. Tears were flowing freely from all of us and the staff. Once you focused your eyes on your mommy, you could not take your eyes off her. You enjoyed the songs that mommy and daddy sang to you and seemed so at peace. When daddy started rocking you, your eyes became so heavy and you drifted off to sleep. God has been so very gracious in healing your body and we all know that you are still very much on your recovery journey. Constant prayers are being said for you hourly.
I love you so very much.

Holy Smokes- we're so pumped to read the last couple of posts! What a wonderful miracle! I am just so excited for you guys. And I'm constantly encouraged and inspired by your always remembering to give God all the glory. That is very special. Do you have a list of your favorite Drs/nurses' names that we might send cards to for their great care? I'm sure they would find that really encouraging.

We love you and we're ready to read more!

Kelly and Travis,
You are amazing parents to go through these three weeks with the spirit and the smile of angels hovering over Bennett. Bennett is a fortunate young one that God has placed in your care. Our children are like precious jewels, to be polished by us and presented to the Lord. Upon our son moving to a new city the time had come for me to write his NICU story. It took me 26 years to tell him the whole story(I knew I would cry)about his 10 days in NICU and I still cried. Our doctor said, "don't dewell on this, live your life." Good luck on telling Bennett, but kept a tissue handy.
Love and peace to you all,
Grace

We adore the pictures of you holding Bennett. What a special memory that is for you. We nearly jumped up and down to see he was moved to an open crib! We know what a HUGE step in the right direction that is. Congratulations! God is definitely answering all of our prayers for your little boy.

Words cannot express the joy those pictures have brought us. We are so happy you were able to hold your sweet son, and rejoice with you! We love you guys. Bennett, you are beautiful, but don't let it go to your head :). We continue to pray for healing.
comment by Lisa Thomas on 09/12/2007
Good morning! I had trouble falling asleep last night b/c I was so excited for you both. The good news was like a shot of caffine right before going to bed! Praying continually for the infection to be completely gone from his lungs and for God's protection against any new infection. I'm sure you'd have slept in that chair holding him all night if they'd have let you! I bet Grana and Grammie are itching for their turn! I can picture them standing at the door...hands washed up to their elbows...gowns on...ready to hold that boy! What joy!

One moment at a time...
