Bennett Mitchell Speck

JOURNAL

September 23rd - Day 35, 9pm
posted on 09/23/2007

Just a small note to let you know that Bennett is doing very well right now.  He's very calm and sleeping quite peacefully, and his oxygen and pressure settings on the vent remain very low.  In fact, at one point he was able to sleep 6 hours in a row and go several hours in a row on room air, or 21 on the ventilator.  This is the first time when he has been this consistent, and it's exactly what we need him to do.  We're still optimistic that Bennett can be extubated within a day or two, so we'll keep you posted on how that goes.  He has had a very good day overall, has slept well, has eaten well, and has only had a few of his famous "Bennett minutes" (thanks Mrs. Moss for coming up with this great catch phrase - everyone in the NICU is using it now!!).  Our hope is that he can have a restful night just like his day.

Thank you all for your love and concern for us and our boy.  The main issues to be in prayer about are his lungs, his neurological functions, his right diaphragm, and his ability to feed well on his own.  Respitory-wise he is doing quite well right now, so we need this to continue in order for him to become extubated and of course eventually come home with his mommy and daddy!

We'll plan to post again in the morning after we hear from the nurses and doctors.  Have a blessed night and beginning to the work week.

Love,

Travis, Kelly, and Bennett

We are praying for all the things you listed...I copied them into my journal. I can't wait to see a picture of that baby without that tube down his throat! Even if it's replaced with a big ol CPAP mask! I know that God will do it!

Your new pictures are so cute! Even though Bennett has his Bennett minutes, he and you both seem very serene. I know that comes from God. We'll be praying tomorrow and for the rest of the week.

How wonderful that his lungs were functioning "normally" for a while. Praise God and may Bennett's lungs be healed to His glory! I love the 'Bennett minute' phrase. I have a feeling you will be using the same term when he is three and having a tantrum about the way you cut his sandwich! Toddlers, especially boys have lots of "minutes" where they are having fits (over things that don't really make sense). :)

Praying that Bennett's suck swallow reflex will kick in and he will be eating like a champ on his own soon.

Love you all, have a restful night.

Bless you both. I am so glad to hear he is doing better. I heard about him being sick from Shellie Davidson (ACU). It is so encouraging that he is on such low settings. Our son who is 14 mos. now was in NICU for a month and the vent for 14 days. 35 days is even harder, but hopefully he will be home soon. I will put him on our prayer list at church. With Andrew every little improvemnt encouraged me he was such a fighter, and still is, he had to have three nurses hold him down to put an IV in. It sounds like your little guy is the same way. Thats good, at least in NICU. Bless you. All of you will be in my prayers.
