WE'RE DONE!!!

At least with all the paperwork to get the homestudy started!  That's such a relief!  We are going to our orientation meeting tomorrow night with Amy Harris and hopefully we will be able to schedule our first home visit and get this homestudy underway!  YEAH!!  We are told that this part of the process can take 1-3 months to complete!  OUCH!

This is so different from Taiwan.  We didn't have to collect any paperwork besides have copies of our BC's and MC to start the homestudy!  It's different and hard to wrap my brain around at times how country and agency requirements vary so much!

Well, I am so happy to have this all behind us.  I believe I counted that we only need our reference letters, our application letter (requesting gender/age and an explanation of why we want to adopt from Ethiopia) our completed homestudy and the I600A approval for the dossier!  Not too much more paperwork to be done but a whole lot of waiting ahead!

Well, that's this weeks update!

April Update - Agency

There are now 34 families in process; five of these families have submitted dossiers to Ethiopia.

Our agency is pleased to announce that the family who accepted two referrals last month now has a finalized adoption for both children!  America World was able to secure court dates for the family, and the process of finalizing the adoptions went smoothly.  The family will most likely travel by the end of the month.

In addition, America World received a referral for another one of our families this month.  The family chose to accept the referral, and we are currently waiting on a court appointment for this family.

What great news!!  We have been waiting to see how smoothly the court process would go for our agency.  The Ethiopia program is new for them!  This is such an answer to prayer!!  We are so excited for these families and cannot wait to follow their journey to their children!

ETHIOPIA'S FLAG

Ethiopian Flag Meaning:
The colored stripes on the Ethiopian flag are significant - the red stripe stands for power, faith and blood; the yellow symbolizes peace, natural wealth and love; and the green represents the land and hope. The colors were also interpreted to have a connection to the Holy Trinity, and the three main provinces of Ethiopia. The star represents unity of the people and the races that make up Ethiopia. The five rays on the outside of the star represent prosperity and the blue disk represents peace.

The three equal horizontal bands of green (top), yellow, and red with a yellow pentagram and single yellow rays emanating from the angles between the points on a light blue disk centered on the three bands; Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa, and the three main colors of her flag were so often adopted by other African countries upon independence that they became known as the pan-African colors.

FUNNY STORY

After looking over Mark's medical form, I realized today that the Doc put down that Mark is not physically , mentally, or emotionally capable of taking care of a child!!

Uhhhh................That's about 5 too late don't ya think!  Well, anyways, we all knew that he was a little off but I think the Doc may have made a mistake! LOL!

We will have to get this little thing fixed!

One of AWAA's families just received word that their court case went as planned and they are now officially the parents of a sweet 4 month old little boy which they named Noah!  It is exciting to see that the court process went smoothly and that they will be traveling soon!  We will get to ask them all about their experience with the in country staff and find out what we can expect with our journey.

We also found out this week that the dates of the court closures in Ethiopia are approx August 7th - October 13th.  It would be a miracle if we got our dossier completed and in country before this date but we are good with a miracle!  I guess we will see!

WHAT IS A DOSSIER?  A DOSSIER IS A COMPILATION OF DOCUMENTS THAT THE FOREIGN GOVERNMENT NEEDS IN ORDER TO APPROVE AND COMPLETE AN INERNATIONAL ADOPTION

(partial list for ETHIOPIA)

Birth Certificates
Marriage Certificate
Divorce / Death Certificates
Physical Exams (adults in household)
Proof of Medical / Life Insurance Policies
Financial Statement
Employment Verification Letters
Non-Employment Verification Letters
Homestudy Report
3 Letters of reference
Local Police Clearances
State level police clearances
I-171H (I-797C approval)
Power of Attorney
Post Placement Agreements
Passport photos
Photos - 2 formal photos of the family, 4 photos of family life, 1 photo of the front of your house, 1 photo of the back of your house, and 1 photo of each main room in your home

Nice list, huh?!?!  Some days it's enough to send you overboard trying to track it all down and get it all notarized, etc! After all of the documents are collected and notarized, they must be sent to the state in which they originated to be certified and authenticated.

So....that's what I've been up to lately!

I think this sums it all up pretty well!!

Ten (Not So Graceful) Ways To Survive The Wait of Adoption

In the spirit of fun, I'd like to share ten ways to spend the time while waiting for your child to come home. I am not going to admit to having done ALL of them...well, not all on the same day anyway....

1.) Put your social worker's phone number on speed dial. Call her every week without fail during the entire process, even when she warns you the wait will still be months. Email her for reassurance on all 'difficult' waiting days, such as those containing the letter S. After all, if she hears from you often, she won't 'forget' about you.

2.) Sign up on every email list that is remotely applicable to your situation. Check for new email at least once per hour all day long. Post on each group at least 3 times a day. For the most pressing questions, use all caps.

3.) Ask often if anyone has news about the next step in your process, whether it be referrals or court dates or travel dates. Complain bitterly if anyone for any reason seems to get 'ahead' of you in the process.

4.) Collect waiting information on every family you have contact with. Use this data to spend hours each day making elaborate time lines, guesstimating:
a. best case scenario
b. most likely scenario, and
c. longest likely wait for each step of the process.

5.) Get very bent out of shape if any stage of your process exceeds the 'best case scenario' timeline. After all, your adoption is special.

6.) Google all Ethiopian holidays, mark them on your calendar and worry about how these holidays might slow your process down. Save your angriest thoughts for judges who take days to get back to court after the Ethiopian New Year. After all, we are Americans. We should not have to wait on Ethiopian holidays.

7.) When you finally get your referral, print out dozens of pictures of your child and give them to anyone and everyone, including that nice checker at the grocery store. Then when you see anyone, talk about nothing but every nuance of your adoption.

8.) Ask every traveling family to get pictures of your child, specifying preferred poses and outfits to be worn. Mark their 'return-home' dates on your calendar so that you can email them demanding news within 5 minutes of their scheduled homecoming.

9.) Leap out of the bushes at your mail carrier every day, desperately hoping he/she is bearing news from your agency. Consider installing an alarm that rings indoors when your mailbox is opened in the unlikely chance that the mail carrier arrives while you are in the restroom.

10.) Go into a depression at the end of every week, because the arrival of Friday means another weekend to survive till Monday when you can once again hover near the phone/computer/mailbox waiting for news.

Doing all these things without fail will ensure that your adoption will feel like the slowest adoption in history.
