2 Month Checkup
posted on 03/10/2008

LG had her 2 month check up today.  Again, her pediatrican said she is "perfect."  Her growth is good, she's hit all her milestones (smiling, cooing, holding her head up) and she's happy.

She also received her first set of shots.  All in all, it went well.  She cried a bit after each injection but was quickly and easily calmed.  She feel asleep on the way home.  Hopefully, there won't be much in the way of a reaction but we have the Tylenol at the ready just in case.

Growth

Mugsy is getting big.  I had to loosen the straps on her swing.

She's also grown out of her newborn clothes :-(

Stubborn is as stubborn does.
posted on 02/19/2008

It's official, Lydia Grace is stubborn.  I guess it was too much to hope for that she wouldn't be.  Of course, a more polite way of putting it might be...determined.  Yes, that's it.  Lydia Grace is determined.  In this case she's determined not to take a bottle.  We are on our 3rd type of bottle with no indication that she likes this one any better then the previous two.

I've decided that instead of challenging her to a head to head stand off that I would just let her be.  Chris will continue to offer her the bottle several times a day.  When I go back to work she will either drink from it when she is hungry enough or drop her mid-morning feeding and wait until I get home.  Either way, she's not likely to starve.

One Month Checkup
posted on 02/06/2008

We just got back from Lydia Grace's one month checkup.  First of all, I LOVE our pediatrician!  She is quick and easy to talk to.  She also thinks LG is, and I quote, "perfect".  She's obviously very smart as well :-)

Anyway, the checkup went well.  Ms. Mugsy is weighing in at 9 pounds, 12 ounces and is 21 1/2 inches long.  She is in the 75% for both height and weight.  Dr. E was impressed with how well she's eating and encouraged us to keep giving her a bottle once a day or so.  Ms. Mugsy isn't really all that impressed with the bottle - she'd rather have it straight from the source ;-) and she needs practice for when I go back to work.

Dr. E also said that Mugsy appears to be a pretty laid back baby.  She said that at about this age babies hit their fussy period so however fussy they are is as fussy as they generally get.  Mugsy is rarely fussy and didn't fuss a bit during her exam.  She was pretty chilled and actually did some cooing.  I have to say, I'm not entirely sure how we ended up with a laid back baby.  I'm certainly not laid back and neither is Chris.  Either way, I'm grateful for her!

Mugsy is also sleeping great these days.  Not every night is the same - we do have the occasionally rough night with feedings every two hours.  However last night she did two stretches of 4 hours of sleep each.  That means that Mommy got 8 hours of sleep last night with only one interruption!  It was lovely!  Dr. E said one thing that helps babies sleep longer at night is feeding more often (every 2-3 hours as opposed to every 3-4 hours) during the day.

All in all, things are going great and it was a great checkup.  We go back in a month for another checkup and her first round of shots :-(

All My Children
posted on 01/18/2008

I have all of my children with me for the first time.  It is an amazing feeling to have them all here, to look and see the individuals that Max and Lexus have become and to know that some day Lydia Grace will join them.

Personally, I think the age difference is a good thing.  Max & Lexus get to enjoy having a younger sister without the typical sibling rivalry that usually comes with a new baby.

I look forward to the years to come, to gathering the kids together and celebrating life's many milestones.  We're celebrating one this weekend.  Maxwell got straight As on his report card for the semester.  We're letting him pick dinner and dessert for Saturday night plus a new computer game.  He picked chicken curry - the kids has great taste - followed by Cold Stone ice cream.  As for the game, we'll hit the store tomorrow for him to pick.

All in all it's been a great day.  I have the kids for a three day weekend this weekend and next.  I'm looking forward to the time together.

First Bath
posted on 01/13/2008

We gave Lydia Grace had her first bath (at home) last night.  It was basically a sponge bath which we did on the kitchen counter.  She wasn't too thrilled with being undressed and left naked for the time it took but she survived.  The whole thing resulted in some great pictures so check out our "Firsts" gallery.

First Outing
posted on 01/13/2008

We took Lydia Grace out on her first outing.  We started with lunch (Mexican) and finished with our first trip to Starbucks.  Today was the perfect day for it.  It was sunny and beautiful - not too warm and not too cold.  We had a great time.  Both Chris and I enjoyed the feeling of being out as a family.  It's like belonging to a special club.  Not to compare LG to a dog but we had a similar experience when we first brought Madison and Zeva home.  There is just something about being out and recognizing other parents, seeing other couples with babies in car carriers and knowing that you belong and share something wonderful.

Starbucks was especially fun for me.  I love coffee and it seemed only appropriate that LG's first visit be this early.  I will, of course, teach her all the finer points to coffee.  Some mothers teach shopping, for me it's about coffee.  (Okay, shopping will be a big part of our future I'm sure...)

The Arrival of Ms. Lydia Grace
posted on 01/10/2008

Ms. Lydia Grace was born on January 9, 2008 at 9:35PM. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces and is 20 inches long. She is perfect and most everything has been going great.

As some of you might recall we were scheduled for induction. The nurse at Swedish called at 2:45 and asked if we were still interested (WTF?!). We hoped in the car and 30 minutes later we were at the hospital. It took a few minutes to get into our room but once we did things went pretty quickly (all things considered).

The nurse started the pitocin at 4:20. At that point I was still 3 cm dilated - no change from my last appointment. There is some dispute as to how effaced I was and at what station Ms. Lydia was resting at. Last Friday my doctor put me at 80% effaced and Lydia at -1. The nurse said we were at 50% effaced and -3 (much higher up and out of the pelvis). In the end it didn't matter.

The pitocin kicked in pretty quickly but the contraction were what I would call "mildly uncomfortable." I could talk through them and didn't have to use my breathing. Heck, at times the only way I knew I was having one was by watching the monitor.

My doctor came in at 6:00PM and broke my water. Experience told me that is when the contractions would pick up in intensity (remember, I've done this before) and I was right. Still, they were irregular in intensity and I know that it is the intense ones that make progress. So, we walked the halls. By we I mean first me and Chris and then later me, Chris, his mom (from whom Lydia gets her name) and his dad. We went round, and round, and round, and round. The contractions increased in intensity and I was often times stopping to breath through them.

We alternated between walking the halls, sitting in the rocking chair and on the labor ball (aka yoga ball) until around 8:30PM. At that time my doctor came in and checked me again. We were at 4 1/2 cm dilated, completely effaced and at -1. I was a little disappointed. I knew the strength of my contractions wasn't enough to make quick progress but I was still hoping for more.

During this time my nurse (I had my own nurse throughout the entire event) filled up the bathtub for me. Both the nurse and my doctor warned that once you get in the tub progress is often quick. Well, I was in the tub for about 10-15. During that time I had 3 very intense contractions - the kind that make you pant and swear. I started feeling pressure so we got out and dried off. The nurse checked me and I was at 7 cm...that's 2 1/2 cm in roughly 15 minutes. Another 2-3 contractions and I was demanding to push. The nurse checked me and I was fully dilated (another 3 cm in under 10 minutes).

The nurse called my doctor who literally came running. I was pushing while she was getting into her scrubs and they were converting the bed. I have to hand it to my doctor, nurse and support staff. They moved FAST. I pushed through 2 contractions (roughly 3-4 minutes) and Ms. Lydia Grace was born.

I can't even begin to describe the feeling of seeing our daughter for the first time. I knew I was pregnant. I knew we were having a baby but the reality of it didn't really hit until I saw her for first time. Later, after they got us settled into our postpartum room, Chris and I were laying on the bed together (hard to do in those hospital beds but we made it work) watching Lydia Grace sleeping in her bassinet next to us - I told him that I knew I would love her, what I didn't know was that having her would make me love him more.

We're a family. That's very different from being a couple.

Everything is going pretty good. Lydia Grace is nursing though we need to perfect our latching on. The only issue so far is her poor little nose. (How anyone can breath out of something so small is beyond me.) She delivered so quickly that she didn't have time to get ride of all of the amniotic fluid and other gunk in her throat and nose. Normally, a woman will push for 1-3 hours, as the baby works its way through the birth canal the contractions help to get rid of that stuff. Lydia Grace was still at -1 when I started pushing. She came quickly and is having to work that stuff out on her own. Hard to do when you don't know how to cough yet.

Other then that, we're doing great. They say we can stay until Friday but Chris can't get comfortable and there really is no sleeping in a hospital. So, I guess we'll just wait and see.
