Night-Night Routine posted on 09/24/2008
Last night I decided that instead of reading Sophia her bedtime story on the couch, as has been our routine, I would take her into her bedroom and we would sit on the floor and read a couple of books (by the way God Gave Us You is soooo freaking cute). It did not go quite as I planned because Sophia kept getting distracted by her toys and climbing off my lap to play with them. Not my brightest idea as this was not quite the windedown time I had in mind.
Anyway, we get through the books and I tell her, "okay Sophia - night night time," as I stand up to turn on her sound machines. This always cues to her that its bedtime. Last night as I did it she was still on the floor and the minute I turned on the sound machine she sat up straight, looked at me, and then crawled towards the door of her bedroom and out, muttering, "no no no no no no" the whole time. She knew sound machine going on means bedtime and she was having none of it! LOL. She is fast now, too! I finally caught her and brought her back but WOW. LOL. She had me cracking up. And, of course, she sees me smiling and thinks she has won and its playtime.
That is my biggest hurdle - not smiling. LOL. It was just that the crawling quickly away while saying "no no no" was too funny for words.

Auntie Martha says: posted on 09/16/2008
My friend Martha has the perfect description of Sophia and her stubborness when it comes to allowing mama and dada to videotape her steps:
"Sophia is like the entertaining frog...have you seen that cartoon? When no one is around, the frog tap dances like crazy. When people are around or the guy gets a camera, the frog sits there and ribbits. Sophia only performs for family! LOL."

Almost 1 and an update! posted on 09/16/2008
Its been a while since I have had a chance to update the journal. A lot has been going on.
- Sophia started whole milk and her reaction was no reaction at all. She seemed to love it the same way she loved formula. There was no cool, "YUM!" type reaction. She just drank what I gave her and liked it. I know its too much to hope that she gets to be this way about everything.
- She is self feeding more and more. Exhibit A:

- And she has started taking steps. She started this last monday with 3 steps in a little Frankenstein type walk. Ever since then she has been steadily picking up the pace to 5 steps, standing up on her own without using anything to pull herself up. Its awesome. She does not always do it - and she definitely does not do it when the camera is out but I am trying to be patient. LOL. The fact is - she is taking steps!
- My little baby turns ONE next Friday! We are planning a big bash for her. It is all very exciting.

Whoa! Our little "Mini-Me..." posted on 08/29/2008
One of the coolest things about being a parent is watching our child taking on our traits or actions. It has always cracked me up that Sophia crosses her feet at the ankles immediately upon sitting down anywhere - in a chair or on the floor - because Abel has always done the same exact thing. Its his instinct and now its Sophia's as well.
I am guilting of saying, "Whoa!" a lot. As in, "Whoa, no way!" or, 'Whoa, Sophia, don't touch that!" My daughter now runs around saying, 'Whoooooooa" as much as she can. Her little mouth forms an O and out it comes. It never ceases to crack me up and amaze me. It is also a fair reminder for us to watch what she say and make sure that Sophia is not picking up an "not so choice" words from us!

Pow-Pow posted on 08/18/2008
Sophia was in R A R E form yesterday afternoon once we got home from visiting my family. She was into EVERYTHING we did not want her to be in and my latest response is, "Sophia...NO...POW POW!" The "pow-pow" is my idea of trying to threaten her with a swat on the butt.
Well, she obviously thinks/knows that mommy is probably bluffing because a few times she would do her "shake-shake" dance when I got to pow-pow. Until this last time when she somehow figured out how to open the cabinet under the wall unit and I said, "Hey! Sophie!" that baby turned to me, POINTED AT ME, and yelled, "BOOOOWWW!" which I could only assume was version of, "POW POW!"
It was all this mom could do to remain stern but I had to turn around and laugh. That little pint sized person actually pointed at me and threatened pow-pow. And she does not even know what POW POW is!!!!

Clap, Clap, Clap! posted on 08/14/2008
As some of you may know - I have been trying to get Sophia to CLAP for months but she never seemed into it. She much preferred the game of mommy and daddy clapping her hands for her and saw no need to do it on her own. Really, what's the fun in that? Every once in a blue moon she would attempt a little clap but then stop. It was funny to us because, well, she really was not into it and I was convinced that this was just something she was going to choose not to do.
Yesterday I walked into the daycare to pick Sophia up, she was sitting in a chair watching the goings on. Sophia saw mommy, smiled, and immediately started clapping her hands in excitement. Talk about my heart melting on the spot! And for the rest of the evening Abel and I caught her clapping at this or that. Now that she has done it she seems to like the feel and sound (not to mention our reaction) and keeps doing it. Its great!

Sophie's Ducks posted on 08/13/2008
The other night I took Sophia outside to see the Ducks by our canal. Abel came out with bread shortly after. It was cute. Sophia loves the ducks and after seeing me do it would point at each of them and yell, "Duh!" lol. I would ask, Sophia where is the duck and the little finger would come up, she would point and go, "Duh!" She seems to do very well with words starting with D. Very easy, I guess. Dadda, Down, Duck...
Once we were through with the bread, we practically got chased back to our sliding glass door by the ducks. I guess they did not believe us. So, we go inside and Sophia stays by the window standing up and looking and yelling at the ducks through the glass. The cats were also there and quite enthralled with the dozen ducks cozied up to our sliding glass door. LOL.
Most of them leave and Sophia is left staring at one duck who is staring at the yellow barrette Sophia is holding in her hand as if it thinks the barrette is a piece of bread. 3 seconds later we hear, "THWACK, THWACK" and realize (and SEE) the frigging duck pecking at the bow THROUGH the glass trying to get at it! Dude. I got a picture of it, too! Those sucks are aggressive!!!! Sophia pulled the bow back like, "Hey, man?!" LOL. Abel and I were howling but at the same time we were very happy the glass was there. Crazy ducks.
And the proof....

He is almost as big as she is!
