Surgery Day.... Update # 4
posted on 10/04/2008

Hello again everyone!

Well, FINALLY, I am alllll done!!   We got done just before 8pm tonight, and Mummy finally got to come in and see me just after 8pm.

I had told you earlier about how my pressures were high due to them closing my two holes (ASD and VSD), and that they were waiting a couple of hours for my bleeding to stop, and to see what my pressures did.  Well, they did go down, and Dr VanArdsell was quite happy with them, so they decided to leave them closed.  Now if they get too high again, they may have to go back in and open them up, at least somewhat, but for now, we hope that they continue to stay low enough that that does not have to happen!  Also, the other good news is that once they cleaned me all up, they were actually able to close my chest!  So that is great!

Mummy ran into the anesthesiologists downstairs, and they told her that I did great... far better than they were expecting me to..  (what were they thinking?? This is ME we are talking about here!!)  So everyone seems pretty happy with how I behaved!  So, over the next few days especially, they will monitor my pressures, and see how that goes.  Of course we also have to make sure I don't get any infections or anything, AND, they will have to do that xray to see if they find the needle.  (Hopefully they find it in the OR)

So, Dr VanArdsell will talk to Mummy some more tomorrow, it was a very long day for everyone involved, and Mummy is just really glad to see me.  She is going to send Auntie some pictures, so she can get them on here.    Now we just wait and see and hope and pray that this works!   Right now, I am on 50% oxygen, and am satting in the lows 90's, so that is really good, especially considering what I just went through!

So, lots of prayers still needed for me, for a speedy and full recovery, I want to be kicking my feet, and squealing and having a birthday party soon!

I will keep everyone up to date, and will be back tomorrow!

Goodnight everyone, and thank you all for thinking of me, praying for me, and checking in on me,

Love,

Wyatt

Surgery Update # 3
posted on 10/04/2008

HI everyone

Ok, its 5:45pm, and here is my latest update

I am still in the OR.  Right now, I am just sort of waiting.  Dr VanArdsell put the Artificial Pulmonary Artery in, he unifocallized my MAPCAS to it, he knicked something by accident, but he fixed it, and he closed both my ASD and VSD.  Right now I am waiting because I am bleeding a lot, and my pressures are high.  He wants to wait a couple hours and see if my pressures go down or not.  And also wait for the bleeding to stop.  If my pressures do not go down, they may have to put some of the holes back, maybe smaller than they were, but still leave them there.  If they go down, then hopefully we can leave the holes closed.  So, he may have to do something with my holes, or he may not, we will see in a couple hours.  Also, because I have been in surgery so long, and so much has been poked, proded, moved around, etc, I am very swollen inside, so they may not be able to close my chest, and it might have to stay open for 5 days or so.  This isn't the greatest thing, but it is not uncommon in someone who has had surgery as long as I have.  So right now we need to hope that my pressures go down, and we can leave the holes closed, so that it won't be an extra surgery again for me later.  We really need all this to work, and improve my heart function.    So, now, Dr VanArdsell is having a break, the other surgeon and nurses are staying with me, and he will check my pressures again at 7pm, and then decide what to do.  It has been a VERY long day!  They also lost a needle, so they are not sure if they lost a needle inside me, or if they lost it in the room.  Sometimes this happens, so they did an xray to see if they saw it in me, and they didn't, so he said in a couple days they would do a full body x ray to make sure it wasn't anywhere, that it hadn't moved.  Depending on where it was, if it was inside me, would decide if they had to take it out or not.  They cleaned out my soroma, and also tested it for infection, and that was negative.

That is all for now, I know he did more than that, but has not explained it all to Mummy, so once we are entirely done, Dr VanArdsell will explain everything to Mummy totally, and I will come back and update again then.  Right now Mummy is just really anxious to see me

Love,

Wyatt

Surgery Day... Update 2
posted on 10/04/2008

Me again!!

Just thought you would all like to know that the Nurse came back out again and told Mummy that I am still doing well.  They are done unifocallizing, and are now `putting things back where they belong`, in the Nurses words.  I have been on Bypass since noon.  She did not tell Mummy what they were doing next or anything like that, just that it took them a long time to get in because of the scar tissue from my first surgery, and that I am doing well!!  SO, they still need to do my soroma, put in the artificial PA, check the pressures in my heart, maybe close my VSD, and who knows what else!    Great Granny is here with Mummy, and Grandpa is coming soon.

When I know more, I will let you know!
Love,
Wyatt

Surgery Day.... Update # 1
posted on 10/04/2008

Hello everyone

Well,  I have been a busy boy for the last couple days of course, getting ready for today.  I last updated you on tuesday afternoon, so I will start from there.    We were allowed out again on Tuesday, so my Great Granny came down, and we went for nice walk outside, and then we went for lunch at the Pickle Barrell, and Mummy got to eat some yummy food again, and I got to snuggle lots with Granny.    In the evening, Auntie and my cousins came, and we were allowed out again, so we went for a walk and for dinner!  I have been having so much fun going out again!    And since I like it so much, I have been behaving extra good while we are out, so that Mummy will take me out lots more!

Wednesday was a busy day for Mummy, talking to lots of people about today.  She saw sooooo many Drs etc who all talked about...guess what??  Well adorable ME of course.... what better way to spend a day than talking about me!  So they got everything they needed to know all sorted out, and told Mummy once more all there plans, all the risks etc.  They also told Mummy that if everything goes absolutely PERFECTLY, and as they planned, that I will be in CCU for at least a week.  Grandpa came to visit us and we had lots of snuggles, and, of course, went for walks and watched my favourite, Baby Einstein!  Just before bed time, I had my first surgical scrub down, in order to get ready for today.  I have to have two before surgery, so the next one was this morning.  I had an ok sleep, but Mummy didn`t sleep much.

This morning I got up early, and had my second scrub down, which I was NOT impressed about, and then they out that silly gown on me, and I looked VERY stylish with my gown and stripey socks!  I chatted with Grandpa and Auntie on the computer while I waited to go, so that they could see cute little me before I went off.     They called for us just before 8am, and so off we went.  Mummy brought me down, and they gave me some medicine that was supposed to knock me out before Mummy handed me to them, so that I wouldn`t freak out.... well, much to there surprise (but not to Mummys Wink)  It didn`t knock me out at all... But it did make me mellow, so that was good enough, and away I went.

Around 11:30 a nurse came out to see Mummy and tell her that I was doing well, and that of course they had not been doing surgery that whole time, but that they had had to put all my lines in, as well as open me up.  So at that point, they were working on unifocallizing.  She did not get into any more details, so we do not know yet if they can put in the artificial pulmonary artery, but we are hoping that since they didn`t say they couldn`t, that that is a good sign.  They have a LOT of work to do in there, and they have the OR booked for me untill 6:30pm tonight.  SO, that is all we know for now, and as soon as we know more,  I will update you again!

I bet you didn`t know I was so talented as to be able to update you from the OR when you all thought I was knocked right out!

Talk to you soon,
Love,

Wyatt

Less than 48 hours to surgery
posted on 08/04/2008

Hi everyone

Before I get in to my update, I will let you all know that surgery got delayed until Thusday April 10th.  A little one in CCU needed my Wednesday spot, so I will be bumping whoever was on Thursday, and will be going then.  We hope I don't get bumped again, and that I do go Thursday.  I will be Dr VanArdsells only surgery that day, and so I will go first thing in the morning.  Keep in mind that we expect this to be a long surgery, so as soon as we know something we will update you, but don't be alarmed if it takes quite a while.

Ok, on to my weekend escapes!

I was allowed to go out both Saturday and Sunday, from 9-3:30.  Then we had to come back so I could have my meds, get checked, and then we were allowed back out again for a little while longer.  Saturday we got up and ready, and Grandpa and Grandma came down, and we went SHOPPING!!   My favourite thing to doTongue out  (Well, maybe Mummys tooWink)  We went to the Eaton Center, and I got lots of new clothes!  Spoiled, as usual, but who can blame them, as I am just so darn cute!  I was a very good boy, as I enjoy very much being out of the hospital.  Lots more exciting things for me to see out there than stuck inside all the time!  I behaved very well, and we even went for lunch/dinner at the Pickle barrel, so that Mummy got to eat some yummy real food, instead of Hospital food court food for a change!  She was pretty happy about that!  You can see some pictures from our day in my April folder of pictures here!  I got a new hat, and I look pretty handsome, as you will see!   Later on that day, we jsut went for a walk outside, but there was ALOT of people out there!  I wa happy to be outside again.  On Sunday, we got up and ready again, and off we went, back to the Eaton Center.  We did a little more shopping, and lots of walking.  I was a very good boy again for Mummy (this time was just Mummy and I gone out) and we had a great day together again.  When we came back in the afternoon, Auntie and John and Gabby and Sean came to see us finally, and brought me some more new clothes, and they came to set up a photo shoot for me, and take some handsome pictures of me!  Once they get them all cropped and downloaded, we will post them on here.  I was a pretty good boy then, athough I was pretty tired, because I did not have a nap.  Oh, and I threw up all over Mummys hand  and arm and myself right before picture time Innocent   After that we went across the street to a different hospital food court for dinner!   We had a very busy weekend, and I was very happy to be out, and visit with everyone!

I have still been throwing up, but they say that is just a part of the heart failure, and only surgery will stop that.  I am working hard trying to get my weight up, but most of my weight gain has been fluids, though I have gaiend a little bit that is actually weight.  I am looking handsome as ever, of course.  I am very smiley, and kicking my feet like crazy now.  When you prop me up in the rocking chair, I am trying SO hard to sit up myself, but that is really hard work.  I am also working on trying to roll, and I get onto my side no problem, but haven't gotten all the way over... yet....  We are anxiously awaitin surgery now, and getting prepared for that, with bloodwork and cultures and all that jazz.

Thats about all for now, I will update you about surgery as we know anything through the day.  Wish me luck!

Talk to you soon,

Love,

 Wyatt

Getting Ready for Surgery in 5 Days....
posted on 04/04/2008

Hello everyone,

Well, my very first fifteen minutes of fame went very well, in fact, I slept through the whole thing!  Mummy was worried I would be fussy or screaming through it, but I slept like a good little man on Mummy's lap through the whole thing!  It was a busy afternoon that day, because we thought we were going to be on one station, and had told everyone about it, then, at the last minute, they changed which station we were going to be on, and we had to try and get a hold of everyone to tell them!  It all went off well though, and the station is going to be sending us a copy of the interview, so we will try to get it on here if it will allow us, so those of you who missed it, can hear it.  My Mummy did great!    Grandpa and Grandma came down that afternoon, adn took pictures as well, which we are going to post on here too in the March folder.

I have been looking pretty cute this week, and Mummy has been taking lots of pictures of me with our new camera!  Grandpa has been to visit us a few times, and I have been snuggling and playing with him.

I have been having a rough time this week, I have been throwing up every day pretty much, but not all day, just sometimes.  I do not seem bothered by it, so it is very strange.  The one day I threw up, and had to be suctioned.  I turned a nice shade of blue.  That was not a very good day.  I have not needed to be suctioned since my very first surgery.   Since then, I have still thrown up, but not needed to be suctioned anymore, thank goodness.   We have been taking lots of walks in the hospital, as that is what I love to do!   I have still been fighting an infection of some sort, still getting a fever off an on, and still am on antibiotics.  In fact, they have decided to keep me on them for 4 to 6 weeks, just to be safe.  They keep redoing my blood cultures, bloodwork, etc to check for infections, and check all my levels, but so far, everything is ok.  My potassium was a little low, but not drastically low as it has been before.  My weight has been going up too much most days, I am very positive, and even with extra diuretics, am not peeing enough, and this extra fluid could possible be why I am throwing up.
Tomorrow, I am supposed to get a pass for 6 hours, to get out of here.  Mummy and I have to stay closeby downtown, but it will be nice to get out into the fresh air, and see some sights out of the hospital.  Mummy says it will be really nice to eat some great food!  We are only allowed for 6 hours though, because I have to be here for my antibiotics.  We MAY be allowed to do the same thing on Sunday, but we are not sure yet.  We will have to be so careful when we are out that I do not pick up any germs that way either.
Dr VabArdsell came to talk to Mummy the other day before he went away, to talk about my surgery again.  He said he would be going ahead on Wednesday as long as my bloodwork was still all ok, even though I am still being treated for infection.  He also went over his plan with Mummy again, though he said, he wasn't REALLY sure what he would be doing, untill he got in there and saw what he was working with. He hopes to put in an Artificial Pulmonary Artery, and take out the soroma, take out the BT shunt, and  POSSIBLY close a hole, depending on the pressures of my heart after all else is done.....  In order for him to put in the Artificial PA, the Branch Pulmonary Arteries, which is what connects to the lungs, need to be big enough.  He is not sure if they are or not, and won't know until he is in there.  We REALLY need to hope and pray that they are.  If they are not big enough, he will not be able to give me this artificial artery, and there won't be anything else he can do.  THe branch arteries are not likely to grow to be able to do it later, because they are not getting enough bloodflow, if anything, they would get smaller,  SO, these branch arteries really need to be big enough now.  Please say lots of prayers for my branch arteries.  This is going to be my longest surgery yet, so it will be a long hard day for me, and a very long hard day for Mummy too.    My heart will be stopped for part of the surgery, and I will of course be intubated too.  I will go to CCU again afterwards, and we are just really hoping that I am back upstairs to 4D in time for my birthday.

SO, thats about all we know for now, I will come back before surgery and update you all, and of course, I will update you as we know anything about surgery.

Talk to you all soon, and wish us luck on our fun day out tomorrow!

Love,
Wyatt

My First Journal Entry Here!
posted on 25/03/2008

Well hello everyone!  Thank you all for coming to my new site, to everyone who has just joined me here, and to those who have been following me for a long time over on Caring Bridge!  As I mentioned on my home page, we will still continue to keep Caring Bridge up to date as well, for everyone who goes there and leaves us messages!  We love to read them, and thank everyone who has been leaving them for us!    You can also leave us messages here.  The reason we decided to come here as well, is that on caring Bridge you are very limited to what you can do... we couldn't post very many pictures of me (and who doesn't want to see LOTS of pictures of handsome little me!?) and we were limited as to how much we could type as well.  We couldn't post videos, or music, or have a neat section like we could here with my fun facts and growth chart.    We also, were never able to type out my whole story, for that reason, as it was just too long, and so that is something that we are hoping to do here  as well, for those who may not have been here since the beginning, that is on the list of things to do for this site!  We hope that everyone enjoys our new site, as well as Caring Bridge!

As most of you know, I am busy fighting an infection, so that I can go for surgery again.  This was not the original plan, the original plan was to do this surgery in November, but I am not growing, and my  heart is working way too hard, so we need to get it done now.    The Dr told Mummy today that there plan is to do it two weeks from tomorrow, and that I am tentatively scheduled for that day.  They say tentatively, because I am on my own schedule!  they also have to make sure the infection is cleared first, and Dr VanArdsell, my surgeon, is going away for a few days... If need be he could do it before he left, but we would rather he wait untill he gets back.   SO, that date is the 9th of April... .just 18 days before my 1st birthday!   Hopefully this will be a great birthday present in that I will be feeling much better afterwards, and doing better!  I can't wait to play with my birthday cake!    In this surgery, they will be giving me an artificial Pulmonary Artery, and unifocallizing the collaterals to it. They will also be removing my soroma. This is a big surgery for me.  So, in the meantime, I am busy here, trying to gain a bit of weight before surgery.

Did you all see my pictures in the March folder?  Well, I just had my very first Easter of course, and I got to play with my Easter cake!  I am not allowed to eat it of course, but I sure had fun playing with it, and then got to eat some chocolate pudding, which I think might be half as good as cake!?  Grandpa and Grandma brought it for Mummy and me, as well as some other  food that Mummy ate, and seemed to like.. but, between us, I don't think that stuff looked nearly as good as the cake!   I also got a crazy musical Easter bunny, which is driving my Mummy insane, because I like it alot, and want it on all the time!   You can also see in my pictures that I have just learned to make a very funny face!  I bite my bottom lip and puff out my cheeks ,and now that I know how to do it, I do it alot!  I look pretty cute of course!   I am trying to play peek a boo also, and that is very cute.  I put something in front of my face, and then when I move it away, I give a big smile!  I am so cute!

I had an ultrasound on my PICC line today, as my arm was swollen the other day and really bothering me.  It went down, and isn't bothering me anymore, but they wanted to check it, so we are waiting for the results on that still now.  I will be on antibiotics until the 28th they decided today, and they took my off the antifungal today.  We are really hoping that when I come off the antibiotics  I will be stable and doing well, and I will then be allowed a pass for a day or two to get out of here before my surgery, so that Mummy and I can have some fun out of here for a day or two!  That would be great!  Who knows what we will do, just that we can be out of here!    Then I need to come back for surgery, get it over with, adn get movin on growing big and strong, and having a big 1st birthday party!!

That is all for now, I will be back again soon!

Love,
Wyatt xo
